Resumo

Soliton diffusion in trans-polyacetylene is studied at low temperatures T using the memory-function approach within the Takayama--Lin-Liu--Maki model (TLM). It is shown that perturbation theory predicts a diffusion constant D which diverges as an inverse power of T, due to the coupling of the soliton to the acoustical phonons. Therefore, without introducing modifications into the TLM model which break the translational invariance and trap the soliton at low T, this model cannot account for a vanishing D at low T.
