Resumo

Bus manufacturing process comprises the following steps: chassis receiving, chassis preparing, body assembly, painting and finishing. Liquid and solid wastes are generated during the process. This study aims to identify mechanisms to minimize the generation of solid waste in the step of chassis preparation. The study followed the methodology of cleaner production by CNTL. Components withdrawal is responsible for the greatest variety and quantity of waste generated during chassis preparing step. Some components are used by the company, but it still represents a small amount of the total generated wastes. Among the components with the possibility of reuse are: washers, nuts, bolts, diesel oil and seatbelts. Panels and metal chairs wastes could be avoided. The total savings related to the techniques of reuse and minimization of the selected components may reach R$ 152.892.90 during the period of one year (base year 2006). Key words: cleaner production, reuse of waste, automotive industry, industrial solid waste, solid waste prevention.
