Resumo

Intravitreally-administered anionic, cationic and neutral surface active agents are all capable of producing cataracts. The developing cataracts are characterized by increased hydration, loss of dry weight, progressive increases in Na+ concentration, and progressive decreases in K+ concentration. Glycolytic metabolism is only moderately decreased in the advanced stages of cataract. Surface active membrane damage is discussed in reference to the pathogenesis of cataract.
