ResumoReinhard Goebel's three editions are a by-product of his exploration of music at the Dresden court during the 17th century with his ensemble Musica Antiqua Köln. In his introduction (which is the same in all three volumes), he compares the relatively high survival rate of the city's 18th-century glories after the 1945 bombardment (most things of value had been hidden in castles and mines around the city) with the utter destruction of the 17th-century collections by the Prussian attacks on the city in 1756. Thus the volumes are entitled ‘Dresden Sonatas’ by association and for their sources they draw on the rich collections in Uppsala and Kassel. The inclusion of sonatas from the posthumous reprint of Pietro Andrea Ziani's music (which was admittedly dedicated to the Elector of Saxony) is a little spurious; and Fux's Rondeau in C for violino piccolo, bassoon and four-part strings might survive as a set of parts in the Sächsische Landesbibliothek in Dresden, but it seems out of place in this series (and is in an utterly different style).
