ResumoDuring the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964-1984) there was censorship and repression against those artists who would use their work as ways to make opposition propaganda and, on the other hand, there was the ideological patrolling of those who had their work given as official propaganda. The present article intends to debate some specific cases under such perspective, mainly focusing on the period of celebration of the Brazilian declaration of independence’s sesquicentennial (1972). Considering such historic milestone we are to approach three major works: the songs “Chamamos aos Heróis da Independência” (We Claim for the Independence Heroes) by Geraldo Filme, “Hino do Sesquicentenário” (The Sesquicentennial Anthem), by Miguel Gustavo - which is also the author for the “marcha” (a Brazilian musical genre) “Pra frente Brasil” (Let’s go forward Brazil) -, and the movie “Independência ou Morte” (Independence or Death), by Carlos Coimbra.
