ResumoEarthquakes are related to rupture phenomena in complex statistical systems of cracks. We first review some available information suggesting that rupture in earthquakes is a critical point. The consequences of this hypothesis on several phenomena are then discussed. In particular, we focus our attention on a simple theory of electroseismic activity based on mechano-electrical transduction effects such as the piezoelectric or the pressure-induced polarization effect. The neighbourhood of the rupture threshold is characterized by a specific response which could correspond to telluric wave activity observed as precursors of earthquakes.
