Abstract Since its release in 1968 Stanley Kubrick's science fiction epic 2001: A Space Odyssey has been the subject of ongoing debate and discussion as to its importance, its influence, and its meaning. Most often one reads of its groundbreaking innovations in special effects and its contribution to the evolution of science fiction films, and occasionally one will find a reference to its music. The reason that the film's music is part of the larger debate about the film has to do with the nature of the score itself and the process that went into its creation.
