ResumoTo the Editor.— Human wart virus (HWV) production and accumulation is hampered by the failure of conventional culture methods. We offer a partial solution to this problem where the site is appropriate. Desquamations from extensive warts of the hands of one patient were collected by saline lavage. Surgical gloves filled with 50 ml of saline were worn for one hour. The wart virus was easily found in our lavages by transmission electron microscopy, by the negative stain technique. Concentration of HWV by high-speed centrifugation and further purification by density-gradient ultracentrifugation was then performed. From the total 100 ml of lavage solution, there was a yield of approximately 2 × 10 11 virus particles. Uninvasive detection, morphology, quantitation, and treatment assessment were thus made possible.
