ResumoThe 1990 Odawara earthquake ( M 5.1) occurred within an area where a large earthquake of M 7 class is expected to occur in the future. This area (the “Odawara area”) has been seismically quiescent since 1933. Analysis of near‐field broadband seismograms and the extent of fore‐ and after‐shocks suggests that the 1990 event had a high stress drop and that the Odawara area remains in a state of high stress which could potentially cause a large earthquake.
