Resumo

The value of the vacuum energy density for a massless scalar field between a perpendicular pairs of parallel walls, with Dirichlet boundary conditions, in (a+b+1)-dimensional spacetime, is calculated. The closely related cases of the spacetime Ta×Rb+1 , a, bϵN (periodic boundary conditions) and of an electromagnetic field between a perpendicular pairs of neutral, infinite, perfectly conducting plates are also treated. In particular, for two such pairs of plates in 4-dimensional spacetime, we obtain an attractive force per unit area F2pp=−0.0717/L4(L=separation between the plates), very close to the value corresponding to a cylinder Fcyl=−0.0691/D4(D=diameter of the cylinder), which had been given previously in the literature.
