Resumo

Benzene and tertiary butanol have been used as radical scavengers to demonstrate the occurrence of sulphate radicals in the iron ion-catalysed autoxidation of bisulphite in aqueous solution. Ferric ions are rapidly reduced to ferrous ions by HSO3− and a steady state is established between both iron species for some time. A detailed reaction mechanism is presented. Computer simulations show that it can account for the essential features of the reaction.
