We Miss You All. Noerine Kaleeba: AIDS in the Family

ResumoMrs. Noerine Kaleeba found out in 1986 that her husband Chris was dying from AIDS. Chris fought his way back from the depths of his illness in 1986 but nonetheless succumbed to a painful death in January 1987. Mrs. Kaleeba subsequently organized The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) in Uganda where she serves as its Director. TASO is the 1st organized community response to the AIDS epidemic in Uganda. Comprised of a group of volunteers organized in late 1987 TASO provides over 6000 people with HIV or AIDS and their families with counseling information medical and nursing care and material assistance. This collaborative publication of the Women and AIDS Support Network (WASN) Zimbabwe and TASO grew out of Mrs. Kaleebas moving stories presented in her keynote address at the first WASN Conference in Zimbabwe November 1989. Stories in this text were compiled from taped discussions with Kaleeba and from her written notes and speeches. In addition to describing the medical aspects of Chris death the background the internal family struggles surrounding his affliction with the syndrome and the social stigma endured in Uganda Kaleeba also talks about teen sexuality safer sex STDs and AIDS inheritance coming out living positively with AIDS clinical care and counseling at TASO.
