ResumoAbstract John Mayall was one of the pioneer daguerreotypists in England, and one of the present authors (l r) is a great-great-granddaughter of his. Her interest in tracing Mayall's contribution led to correspondence and the shared research described in this essay. One of the first surprises was to discover that some of Mayall's sons also became photographers, and the scope of these studies had to be enlarged accordingly. However, much remains uncertain, and it has been necessary at times to surmise, hypothesize and guess. In what follows, such passages have been clearly indicated.
