ResumoRefined roentgenological techniques have shown that the incidence of sliding hiatus hernias is much higher than was formerly reported. The present study, therefore, was made to determine the true incidence of this fairly common condition. The material consisted of 100 consecutive patients, varying in age from 6 to 90 years, referred for routine barium meal. In all 100 cases, with the patient lying prone on an abdominal compression pad, a supradiaphragmatic pouch of the stomach was demonstrated; a definite incidence of hiatus hernia in 100%. Verification of the presence of gastric mucosa in the hernia pouches was obtained by studying 3 of the patients using a Crosby and Kugler biopsy instrument. The authors conclude that the roentgenological demonstration of a sliding hiatus hernia cannot be taken to indicate an abnormality but, without associated findings, is a normal occurrence without clinical significance.
