ResumoTHE deposition of lipid in the embryonic fat organs occurs with periodically fluctuating rates (Feldman et al., 1962a). Recent evidence (Budowski et al., 1961; Moore and Doran, 1962) suggests that similar fluctuations occur in the embryonic liver, but these data are incomplete and inconclusive. In order to clarify this point, we undertook a detailed fractionation of embryonic liver lipids over the period of 11–19 days of incubation and then determined the fatty acid composition of each lipid. Our results are described in this report. The procedures for fractionating the lipids and determining their fatty acid composition are described in previous reports (Feldman et al., 1962a, b). We monitored the fractionation procedure by thin-layer chromatography, resolving the neutral lipids with chloroform-benzene (2:1, v/v) and the phospholipids with chloroform-methanol-water (35:11:2, v/v).
