Parchment making in eighteenth-century France: historical practices and the written record

Click to increase image sizeClick to decrease image size Abstract Documentation of industrial arts within dictionaries, encyclopaedias and treatises has recorded parchment-making practices observed in eighteenth-century France. If understood within the context in which they were produced, the accounts in the treatises of Lalande and the Encyclopédie of Diderot and d'Alembert have the potential to contribute substantially to knowledge of historical practice. Significant information may also be found in the Dictionnaire universel de commerce of Savary des Brûlons and the treatise of Dessables. Together, these texts provide a clear description of parchment-making techniques at a time when trade practices were standardized but had not yet been modernized through industrialization. Comparative examination of the instructions for each stage of production offers a detailed account of how practitioners may have carried out these activities. Such investigation is particularly informative when these stages are also considered within the continuum of ancient, medieval and industrial era trends, and with reference to surviving historic examples in modern collections. Résumé «Fabrication du parchemin en France au XVIIIème siècle: pratiques historiques et sources écrites» La documentation sur les arts industriels dans les dictionnaires, les encyclopédies et les traités décrit des méthodes de fabrication du parchemin observées dans la France du XVIIIème siècle. Si on les resitue dans le contexte qui les a produit, les descriptions dans les traités de Lalande et dans l'Encyclopédie de Diderot et d'Alembert peuvent contribuer de manière substantielle à la connaissance des pratiques anciennes. Des renseignements significatifs peuvent aussi être trouvés dans le Dictionnaire universel de commerce de Savary des Brûlons ainsi que dans le traité de Dessables. Considérés conjointement, ces textes fournissent une description claire des techniques de fabrication du parchemin à une époque où les pratiques commerciales étaient normalisées sans être encore modernisées par l'industrialisation. Une étude comparative des instructions à chaque étape de production apporte un compte-rendu détaillé de la façon dont les praticiens peuvent avoir mené leurs activités. Une telle recherche est particulièrement instructive quand on considère ces étapes dans la continuité des tendances anciennes, médiévales et industrielles, mais aussi en comparaison avec des exemples historiques subsistant dans les collections modernes. Zusammenfassung “Pergamentherstellung im Frankreich des 18. Jahrhunderts: historische Praxis und schriftliche Quellen” Die Dokumentation der industriellen Künste in zeitgenössischen Wörterbüchern, Enzyklopädien und historischen Abhandlungen hat die französische Pergamentherstellung des 18. Jhds. festgehalten. Solange sie in dem Kontext, in dem sie verfasst wurden verstanden werden, stellen die Abhandlungen von Lalande und die Enzyklopädie von Diderot und d'Alembert ein großes Potential zur Ergänzung des historischen Wissens dar. Auch im Dictionnaire universel de commerce von Savary de Brûlons und in der Abhandlung von Dessables lassen sich viele Informationen finden. Zusammen geben uns diese Texte ein klares Bild der Pergamentherstellung in einer Zeit als die Handwerksmethoden standardisiert, aber noch nicht durch die Industrialisierung modernisiert waren. Ein vergleichendes Studium der Instruktionen jedes Produktionsstadiums gibt uns einen detaillierten Eindruck der Aktivitäten der Handwerker. Solche Untersuchungen sind besonders fruchtbar wenn sie im Kontinuum der antiken, mittelalterlichen und industriellen Traditionen gesehen werden, und wenn ein Bezug zu historischen Beispielen in modernen Sammlungen hergestellt wird. Resumen “Pergamino en el siglo XVIII en Francia: las prácticas históricas y los registros escritos” La información sobre las artes industriales encontradas en diccionarios, enciclopedias y tratados han documentado las prácticas de elaboración de pergamino en el siglo XVIII en Francia. Si se entienden dentro del contexto en el que se produjeron, el recuento en los tratados de Lalande y en la Enciclopedia de Diderot y d'Alembert tienen el potencial de contribuir, sustancialmmente, al conocimiento de la práctica histórica; igualmente se puede encontrar información significativa en el Diccionario Universal sobre Comercio de Savary Brulons y en el tratado de Dessables. En conjunto, estos textos ofrecen una clara descripción de las técnicas de la elaboración del pergamino en un momento en el que las prácticas comerciales se estandarizaron pero aún no se había establecido una industrialización moderna. Un exámen comparativo de las decisiones técnicas para cada etapa de la producción nos ofrece un relato detallado de cómo los artesanos pudieron haber llevado a cabo estas actividades. Esta investigación es particularmente relevante cuando estas etapas se observan dentro de la continuidad de las tendencias de la época antigua, medieval e industrial, y con la referencia de los ejemplos históricos que han sobrevivido en las colecciones modernas.
