ResumoFour groundwater tracing experiments, using sodium chloride and sodium fluorescein as tracers, were undertaken at Aberfan, in order to investigate the influence of mining subsidence on the pattern of groundwater flow. Measurements indicated that areas subject to tensional strains were characterised by rapid groundwater movement and areas subject to compressional strains by slow or negligible groundwater movement. Boundaries between zones of tensile and compressional strains should be regarded as potential hydraulic discontinuities. Mining subsidence appeared to have contributed to the enlargement of the groundwater catchment draining the tip-complex at Aberfan.
