The brief by Bolton Wanderers Football Club to design a flagship stadium on a 200-acre site at Middlebrook, Horwich, near Bolton, has now been realized. The result is a stadium currently capable of accommodating nearly 28 000 seated spectators, with unrivalled levels of spectator comfort and safety and with disabled facilities comparable with the best of the English Carling Premiership, also providing hospitality for up to 3000 guests and with an exhibition/indoor sports facility offering 35 000 square feet of usable 8 m clear height exhibition space. This paper outlines: contract procurement, stadium design, construction costs, and the success of the stadium in use.
