Occasionally, such injuries result in detrusor areflexia or urethral hypotonicity or both. The results of the urodynamic evaluation of 4 patients with suprasacral spinal cord injuries are described. Detrusor areflexia and urethral hypotonicity were demonstrated in 3 cases and urethral smooth muscular hypotonia but preserved reflex detrusor function in 1. It is shown that destruction of the thoracolumbar sympathetic outflow can cause the complete loss of urethral smooth muscular closing function and that resting urethral closure is totally independent of preganglionic cholinergic influences. © 1979 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited byMcGuire E, Woodside J, Borden T and Weiss R (2018) Prognostic value of urodynamic testing in myelodysplastic patientsJournal of Urology, VOL. 167, NO. 2 Part 2, (1049-1053), Online publication date: 1-Feb-2002.RODIC B, CURT A, DIETZ V and SCHURCH B (2018) BLADDER NECK INCOMPETENCE IN PATIENTS WITH SPINAL CORD INJURY: SIGNIFICANCE OF SYMPATHETIC SKIN RESPONSEJournal of Urology, VOL. 163, NO. 4, (1223-1227), Online publication date: 1-Apr-2000.Kaplan S, Chancellor M and Blaivas J (2018) Bladder and Sphincter Behavior in Patients With Spinal Cord LesionsJournal of Urology, VOL. 146, NO. 1, (113-117), Online publication date: 1-Jul-1991.Hellström P, Kortelainen P and Kontturi M (2018) Late Urodynamic Findings After Surgery for Cauda Equina Syndrome Caused by a Prolapsed Lumbar Intervertebral DiskJournal of Urology, VOL. 135, NO. 2, (308-312), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1986.Blaas J and Barbalias G (2018) Characteristics of Neural Injury After Abdominoperineal ResectionJournal of Urology, VOL. 129, NO. 1, (84-87), Online publication date: 1-Jan-1983.Barbalias G and Blaivas J (2018) Neurologic Implications of the Pathologically Open Bladder NeckJournal of Urology, VOL. 129, NO. 4, (780-782), Online publication date: 1-Apr-1983.McGuire E (2018) Editorial CommentJournal of Urology, VOL. 129, NO. 4, (782-782), Online publication date: 1-Apr-1983.Woodside J (2018) Stress Urinary Incontinence in MenJournal of Urology, VOL. 128, NO. 6, (1246-1249), Online publication date: 1-Dec-1982.Blaivas J (2018) The Neurophysiology of Micturition: A Clinical Study of 550 PatientsJournal of Urology, VOL. 127, NO. 5, (958-963), Online publication date: 1-May-1982.McGuire E, Woodside J, Borden T and Weiss R (2018) Prognostic Value of Urodynamic Testing in Myelodysplastic PatientsJournal of Urology, VOL. 126, NO. 2, (205-209), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1981.Woobsibe J and Crawford E (2018) Urodynamic Features of Pelvic Plexus InjuryJournal of Urology, VOL. 124, NO. 5, (657-658), Online publication date: 1-Nov-1980.Woodside J (2018) Urodynamic Evaluation of Dysfunctional Bladder Neck Obstruction in MenJournal of Urology, VOL. 124, NO. 5, (673-677), Online publication date: 1-Nov-1980.Borden T and Woodside J (2018) Urinary Tract Undiversion in a Patient with an Areflexic Neurogenic Bladder: Management with Intermittent CatheterizationJournal of Urology, VOL. 123, NO. 6, (956-958), Online publication date: 1-Jun-1980.Jeffs R (2018) Editorial CommentJournal of Urology, VOL. 123, NO. 6, (958-958), Online publication date: 1-Jun-1980.
