ResumoF prostaglandin levels rose significantly on day 14 of the sheep estrous cycle in intact ewes and in ovariectomized ewes treated with exogenous progesterone and estradiol, as measured by radioimmunoassay. PGF did not show this significant elevation unless estradiol was injected following the sequence of progesterone injections. Law to undetectable PGF was found in hysterectomized animals and in animals immunized against estradiol. This evidence, combined with that reported by others strongly favors the view that PGF is the “luteolytic” factor of uterine origin in sheep that controls the normal duration of corpus luteum function.
