Resumo

While the Ex-Voto has long been valued as a great monument of French 17th-century painting, little effort has been made to determine its role in the serious disruption of the life of the Church in France caused by friction between Jansenists, Jesuits, and authority, both ecclesiastical and royal. An examination of numerous documents and of the painting itself indicates the significance of the event depicted to the Jansenist cause and the painting's place not only in the development of European art, but as an embodiment of the artist's theoretical concepts.
