1. Filaments of Spirogyra which had been immersed for different periods of time in several concentrations of various anesthetics were centrifuged with accelerations which usually caused no displacement of the chloroplasts in most cells of non-anesthetized filaments. 2. The initial effect of certain concentrations of the anesthetics was to decrease the value of c0 in the equation, V = k(c - c0), which approximately governs the rate with which the chloroplasts in cells of Spirogyra move in response to centrifugal accelerations. A decrease in c0 was interpreted as a decrease in protoplasmic elasticity. 3. With longer immersions c0 returned to approximately the normal value except in the case of the alcohols, in which instances c0 became greater than normal (elasticity increased).
