ResumoPublished data on the effect of composition, temperature, crystallization, and thermal history on measured values of the specific heat of glass are reviewed. The Einstein-Debye relationship between temperature and atomic heat of solids does not apply to vitreous materials. The actual type of function expressing variation of specific heat with temperature is nevertheless undoubtedly the same for all glasses and an empirical equation is proposed as a simple and reasonably accurate expression for relating mean specific heat of any glass to temperature. Factors are derived for the most common constituents of glass whereby the constants a and c0 in the foregoing empirical equation can be calculated from the glass composition yielding specific heat data with an accuracy generally better than 1% in the range from 0° to l300°C.
