ResumoAbstract Inhalation of 13% CO in dogs for 5 min was lethal in minutes to hours, hypothermia having only a minimal effect on survival. Even though the blood levels after CO inhalation were similar to those induced by transfusion of COHb red cells (64%, respectively, 60% COHb), no toxicity was observed in the latter. Intraperitoneal injections of 100% CO in amounts of up to 150 ml/kg of body weight daily for 90 days to a cummulative dose of 90 liters produced similar COHb blood levels and was nontoxic. Chronic intraperitoneal injection of CO presents a new model to study chronic effects of CO.
