ResumoYoung children are vulnerable to risk, abuse, and neglect, and are also the age group that is most often referred to social services agencies because of concerns for their well-being. Risk factors include indicators in the child, parent, family, environment, and macro-systems. Risk assessment focuses on identifying immediate and future risk, whereas needs assessments are holistic and focus on child development in relation to parenting capacity and environmental circumstances. Educators play a key role in protecting children and preventing abuse through interagency cooperation, mandatory reporting, targeted prevention programs, and educating children and families concerning safety, well-being, and educators’ obligations in responding to concerns.
