Resumo

Young children are vulnerable to risk, abuse, and neglect, and are also the age group that is most often referred to social services agencies because of concerns for their well-being. Risk factors include indicators in the child, parent, family, environment, and macro-systems. Risk assessment focuses on identifying immediate and future risk, whereas needs assessments are holistic and focus on child development in relation to parenting capacity and environmental circumstances. Educators play a key role in protecting children and preventing abuse through interagency cooperation, mandatory reporting, targeted prevention programs, and educating children and families concerning safety, well-being, and educators’ obligations in responding to concerns.
