Resumo

Abstract Sliding wear of bearing aluminum lubricated with polyphenyl ethers in the boundary region was investigated using a pin and cylinder wear machine which produced a continuous record of wear. Diphenyl ether, n-dodecyloxyphenyl phenoxyphenyl ether, and bis (phenoxyphenyl) ether were studied. The wear rates obtained with the first two compounds were significantly higher than those obtained with aliphatic ethers previously studied and the wear rate with the third, 4P3E, was extremely high. These high wear rates are probably attributable to reactive phenolic decomposition products produced by locally high temperatures.
