Synthetic Organic Chemistry Methods

The synthesis and flash-thermolysis of methylenephtalide 1 and 3-methylene- 2-coumaranone 2 are reported. At high temperatures ( ⩾ 1000°C) these two isomeric lactones do not extrude CO2 but give rise to new clean thermal rearrangements.
