ResumoSUMMARY. — In 1814, Ampère published his theory of the chemical combinations of substances. This theory is based on the cristallography of Hauy, on the experimental results of Gay-Lussac and on the hypothesis that "the number of particles is proportional to the volume of the gas". At the same time, in the area of philosophy, he was scrutinizing the role of abstraction and that of relations in our knowledge of the external world. These concepts help to clarify the mathematical procedure followed in his chemical theory. Although Ampere's classification of the sciences was formulated later, it enables one to locate in retrospect his theory of chemical combination among the mathematical and physical sciences.
