Single unit recording in the caudate nucleus during sessions with elaborate movements in the awake monkey

Resumo

Unit recordings were performed in the caudate nucleus of awake macaques. Animals were maintained in a restraining chair and had been trained to perform various types of elaborate movements to obtain food-reward. Three types of movement were studied: (a) natural, large gestures of grasping solid food (peanut) from a tray and bringing it to the mouth; (b) small amplitude lever-pressing movements for fluid reward (fruit juice), mainly involving distal segments (fingers, wrist); (c) same as (b), but involving essentially proximal musculature, and consisting of an ample isotonic pulling with arm and shoulder. Units were recorded before and during each of the preceding types of movements (but in different animals). Results indicate that: (1) caudate cells were encountered in all 3 cases which were accelerated during different stages of the movement; (2) more cells were activated in situations (a) and (b) than (c); (3) very few cells displayed inhibition instead of excitation; (4) among cells modified during movement, very few were also accelerated through passive flexions or extensions of the forelimb; (5) some caudate cells were also clearly activated through various visual or auditory intercurrent stimuli, probably arousing the animal's attention. Trois types de mouvements ontééadoptés: (a) saisir un aliment solide (cacahouète) sur un plateau, puis le porteràsa bouche (geste ample et complexe); (b) appuyer sur un levier, d'un mouvement limité, intéressant essentiellement les extrémités distales (doigts et poignet) pour déclencher un distributeur de liquide; (c) effectuer une traction, principalementàl'aide des segments proximaux,également pour actionner le distributeur de liquide. Des unités ont pueˆtre recueillies au cours de ces 3 types d'opérations motrices. Les résultats se résument ainsi: (1) dans les 3 situations expérimentales des cellules caudées ontétéisolées, quiétaient accélérées pendant le mouvement; (2) le nombre de cellules activées s'est révéléplus abondant dans les situations (a) et (b) que dans la situation (c); (3) très peu de cellules ont témoignéd'une inhibition (au lieu d'une excitation); (4) parmi les cellules modifiées pendant le mouvement actif, très peu furentégalement activées par une mobilisation passive du membre antérieur correspondant; (5) certaines cellules caudées ont répondu — en l'absence de mouvement —àdes stimulus intercurrents visuels ou acoustiques, probablement susceptibles d'éveiller l'attention de l'animal.
