ResumoThe valence state of Tl in TlBaCaCuO systems is studied using X-ray photoemission. The mechanism of hole formation is discussed in terms of the charge transfer. Our XPS data suggest that a charge transfer such as Tl3+ - [CuO]0 → Tl(3−δ)+ − [CuO]δ+ could occur in Tl2Ba2Can−1CunO2n+4(n=2, 3) with double [TlO] layers, but not in TlBa2CaCu2O7 with a single [TlO] layer.
