Resumo

Among 130 children with recurrent secretory otitis media randomly selected from an allergy clinic, 110 (85%) had the following allergic disorders: allergic rhinitis, 72 (55.5%); asthma, 30 (23%); eczema, 4 (3%); allergic conjunctivitis, 2 (1.5%); and urticaria, 2 (1.5%). A history of fluctuating hearing loss was obtained at initial examination in 42 (32%). Audiograms showed moderate to marked hearing loss in 30 of 42 patients tested. Immunoglobulins were within normal bounds in 64 of 80 sera, with IgG levels below normal in eight patients. Follow-up varied from three months to nine years with 80% of patients improved with combined otologic and allergic treatment.
