ResumoAbstract In this paper the bending collapse characteristics of steel square and rectangular steel tubes are studied using a test machine which applies pure bending moment without imposing shear and tensile forces. Under pure bending moment, delayed buckling modes occur and dependent on the deformation test length and shape of section. For delayed mode, the strain energy absorbed through bending of the tubes is also verified by finite element analysis. Overall, the theory developed here shows the predictions of maximum moment and moment-rotation angle characteristics to be in good agreement with experimental results.
