ResumoA mathematical model is developed to predict the velocity of contraction of three different cat skeletal muscles: lateral gastrocnemius, medial gastrocnemius and solues. The model predicts contraction velocity as a function of load (P), the fraction of total activation (E) and the fractional composition of slow fiber types (X). The model has been defined for two types of motor unit recruitment: 'forward' in which motor units are recruited from 'slow' to 'fast', and 'backward' in which motor units are recruited from 'fast' to 'slow'. The utility of the model is discussed in terms of a computer program to maintain a constant velocity contraction in a set of muscles.
