Resumo

Stability of a Laponite CP sol in the presence of the chlorides of lithium, sodium, potassium, ammonium, magnesium, calcium, barium, lanthanum, and of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C16TAB) has been studied in detail over a wide pH range. The coagulation process was followed by capillary suction time (c.s.t.) and turbidity (Rayleigh Ratio, R.R.) measurements. At high electrolyte concentrations, the capillary suction method revealed maxima and minima, indicating different physical properties of the flocculated sol as the concentration of the added electrolyte was varied. No such variations could be detected by turbidity measurements. An attempt was made to relate the stability data of this clay to other surface chemical properties such as the electrophoretic mobility.
