ResumoThiophene oligomer having halogen terminal is prepared by coupling of the Grignard reagent of 2,5-dihalogenothiphene using nickel-comples. Williamson reaction type coupling of the thiophene oligomer with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) yeilds PVA with pendant thiophene oligomer. The obtained copolymer is soluble in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). A cast film of the copolymer on ITO electrode shows good electrochromic response. The color of the film is reddish brown at the undoped state and changes to deep blue-black on doping at an applied potential of 2.5 V.
