ResumoThere are pupils in schools who have difficulty processing spoken and written information presented to them and producing a coherent response. These communication difficulties go unnoticed as such pupils usually answer specific questions and speak reasonably clearly. They might be considered as having an unspecified learning difficulty which affects ability to access education through the medium of spoken and written language. The article is based on a collaborative project between school, the special needs teaching service and the University of Leicester which aims to clarify such pupil problems and evaluate support strategies. There are now over a 100 children recorded and the following discussion aims to outline their difficulties and examine some of the issues relating to academic performance by considering the details of one typical child.
