In a letter published in the 9 May issue ofScience(1), a majority of the committee members urged adoption of the new name, to eliminate "the multiplicity of names currently in use." The virus has variously been called lymphadenopathy-associated virus (LAV) or human T-lymphotropic virus type III (HTLV-III).
