Abstract Spatially resolved H-alpha and forbidden S II 6716, 6731 wavelength line profiles are presented for the working-surface region of the Herbig-Haro object HH 111 V, spatially and kinematically separating the Mach disk emission from that of the bow shock. Detailed measurements of the electron density as a function of position and velocity across the bow shock, in conjunction with new bow shock emission models, show that an ambient magnetic field of about 30 micro-Gauss inhibits the compression of the postshock gas. The models also indicate that the magnetic field also contributes to extending the cooling distance behind the shock to resolvable scales.
