ResumoUsing a turning points approach, we identified types of on-again/off-again (on-off) relationships based on how partners negotiated breakups and renewals across their relationships. Descriptions of participants' relational transitions were qualitatively assessed and five on-off types emerged (Study 1). These types were then characterized with quantitative data from a new sample (Study 2). Establishing these types provides a greater understanding of on-off relationships. For example, although certain types demonstrated relational status transitions strengthened the relationship or helped partners reach closure in terminating their relationship, other types suggested multiple transitions reflected lower quality functioning. Findings additionally extend research regarding relational transition negotiations.
