He holds a B.A. in anthropology (1967) and a Ph.D. in linguistics (1974) from the University of Hawaii, and has done field research in Sarawak (1971) and the Admiralty Islands (1975). From 1974 to 1976 he held a postdoctoral research fellowship in the Department of Linguistics, Institute of Advanced Studies, Australian National University. Since 1976 he has been employed at the University of Leiden, where he is now associate professor in the Department of Languages and Cultures of Southeast Asia and Oceania.
