Abstract Why did Gounod's La Nonne sanglante fail at the Opéra at its first performances (1854)? This small problem in French operatic history raises large historiographical issues: What kinds of evidence shall we consult and how shall we weight them? Shall we see as the primary agents in this tale the youngish composer (Charles Gounod), the Opéra's director (François Crosnier), the young star contralto (Palmyre Wertheimber), and/or the critic and poet who was her eager supporter (Théophile Gautier)? Seven possible explanations are offered.
