ResumoWith this featured interview in March 2006, filmmaker Mario Monicelli (1915–2010) offered his insights on the Italian comedy genre known as Commedia all'italiana. Questions prompt a consideration of the filmmaker's fascination for cynical comedies, political satires, and grotesque parodies. At the closing stage of a long and prolific cinematographic career, Monicelli not only shared views on his relationship with comedy narratives, but also explained why Italian satires were both the product of literary ingenuity as well as quotidian human experience. According to him, the absence of socio-political engagement, dissolving collective values and growing individualism in Italy, inspired many of his films. Mario Monicelli described his cinema through his own iconoclastic point of view: in the end, he provided an accurate social barometer and a powerful tool that mirrored the struggles within Italian society.
