Resumo

This work was undertaken in an attempt to determine two points: (1) the optimum position of fixation of limbs in order to conserve muscle power and (2) the best method of treatment of muscles paralyzed by loss of nerve supply. In order to accomplish this, it is necessary to determine the power of given muscles in living animals, then to immobilize these muscles in various positions over an arbitrary period and finally to remove the immobilization and determine the power in the muscles at intervals in order to learn the effect of the immobilization and the ability of the muscle to return to normal with use. This having been accomplished, a series of muscles should be denervated, treated in the same manner and subjected to various types of physical therapy.
