Passages 2009 changing an institution: Refocusing JCN on systems neuroscience

ResumoThe Journal of Comparative Neurology is the oldest basic neuroscience journal in the world and has been an institution in the neuroscience community for more than a century. Our name reflects that age; it was chosen by C.L. Herrick in 1891 to represent what was then an emerging field. Neurology was not yet a clinical specialty, so he used the term to represent all of neuroscience. The comparative method was the latest experimental approach to studying nervous systems. In the early 1900s, he added the word “Psychology” to the title, to imply a functional dimension, but this was dropped in 1910, and since that time the Journal has served as the premier journal in the field of neuroanatomy. In the intervening century, much has changed. Monodisciplinary departments, such as anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology are disappearing from our schools and have been replaced by interdisciplinary departments, including cell biology, neuroscience, and developmental biology. Neuroscience in particular has become a multidisciplinary field, because the best work often requires multiple approaches. JCN has responded by publishing more papers today that employ mainly physiological, cellular, or molecular methods, often mapping new genes in the nervous system and exploring changes in gene expression across development or with physiological manipulations. However, nearly all of our papers continue to have a dominant neuroanatomical theme, and JCN is still viewed as being largely a neuroanatomical journal. At the same time, many scientists who at one time published their best work in JCN have found that their current work no longer fits this monodisciplinary model. Moreover, this disparity is likely to become greater in the future. Against this background, the necessity to redefine JCN in the modern world is clear. One of the key elements of JCN, which has not changed in recent years, has been our clear and consistent focus on systems neuroscience. From our earliest days, we have published papers on how neuronal systems are organized, how they work, and how they develop and respond to injury. In this redefinition, we would like JCN to retain this identification with systems neuroscience and make it more explicit as the touchstone for the Journal's future development. We have no intention of diminishing the role of our excellent papers in comparative neuroscience but will consider them within the context of our mission in systems neuroscience. As a first move in this direction, with this issue, JCN is adding a tagline under our usual logo that emphasizes our renewed focus on systems neuroscience. This tagline will appear on our cover and our website and is meant to serve as a flag to neuroscientists of our new direction and purpose. As a more concrete move, we are adding new members to the Editorial Board who will signal our change in focus, including Marcus Raichle from Washington University, an expert in functional imaging and cognitive neuroscience; Joseph Ledoux from New York University, who studies emotional processing systems in the brain; Peter Strick from the University of Pittsburgh, who studies motor cortex and related systems in primates; Josh Sanes from Harvard University, a leader in synaptic specification; John Trojanowski from the University of Pennsylvania, who studies mechanisms of neurodegenerative disorders; Ann Graybiel from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who is an expert on basal ganglia function; Catherine Dulac from Harvard University, who studies pheromone signaling and sexual behavior; and Michael Stryker, from the University of California, San Francicso, who works on plasticity in visual cortex. Each of these new members, while grounded in brain structure, also brings expertise in other fields and extends the range of the Journal. As occurs each year, one-quarter of our current Editorial Board will reach the end of their current terms. We are pleased that several have agreed to continue on the new board, including Charles Greer from Yale University, who works on olfactory systems; Harvey Karten from the University of California, San Diego, who studies visual systems in birds; and Anton Reiner, who studies basal ganglia in birds. We also thank several members who will be rotating off the Editorial Board. David Hopkins, Alex McDonald, Elliott Mufson, Susan Sesack, and Yoshio Shigenaga have been thoughtful reviewers and invaluable colleagues; we look forward to their continued association with the Journal and hope that they can come back onto the Board at some later time. In addition, we thank the reviewers who for the past year have provided us with their judgments, upon which decisions on acceptance of manuscripts for JCN is based. The list of reviewers is given below, with an asterisk by the names of those who have reviewed four or more manuscripts over the last year. Finally, with this issue the Journal is adopting a new typeface and page layout, using a clearer, more modern sans serif font for out text. We hope this new look will also signal our change in intellectual focus, as we move into a new era for the Journal. Louise C.
