Abstract The course of the hydrogenation of 1,2‐di‐ tert. butylbenzene under the influence of rhodium and platinum catalysts has been investigated. Cis ‐ and trans ‐1,2‐di‐ tert. butylcyclohexane and the intermediate product 2,3‐di‐ tert. ‐butylcyclohexene always appearing in the hydrogenations have been isolated and characterized. The rate of hydrogenation of 1,2‐di‐ tert. butylbenzene has been compared with that of benzene and that of some 1,2‐dialkylbenzenes.
