ResumoThe trinuclear rhenium alkyls, Re3R6Cl3(R = Me3SiCH2 or Me3CCH2), have been made by interaction of trirhenium nonachloride, Re3Cl9, with the appropriate Grignard reagent and the adducts Re3R6Cl3L3[L = H2O or C5H5N (py)] and the pyridine adduct, Re3Me6Cl3py3, of the unstable methyl compound have been characterised; interaction of rhenium pentachloride or the tetrahydrofuranate, ReCl4(thf)2, with the Grignard reagents gives what may be a transient species ReR4, which gives Re3R12 under argon, the first knonw dinitrogen peralkyl Re2R8N2 under nitrogen, and ReOR4 in the presence of oxygen.
