ResumoOf forty-eight patients with cancer of the posterior pharynx seen between 1937 and 1970 none was salvaged before 1951, and an occasional cure was obtained between 1952 and 1960. During the most recent decade, however, vertical pharyngotomy as the initial excisional surgery provided a cure rate of 62.5 per cent; four of the five survivors are alive more than four years after operation.
