ResumoThe Forty-Seventh Annual Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) was held at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California, from January 31 to February 2, 2011, with an attendance of almost 4,000, which included surgeons, allied health care professionals, spouses, and exhibitors. Attendees of the Annual Meeting had the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational sessions, including Parallel Surgical Forums, Ticketed Breakfast Sessions, Surgical Video Matinees, and STS University. The Monday morning General Scientific Session featured three J. Maxwell Chamberlain Memorial Papers, the most highly rated papers of the Annual Meeting, which were selected for their appeal to each subspecialty: General Thoracic Surgery—“Is Anticoagulation Indicated for Postoperative General Thoracic Surgery Patients with New-onset Atrial Fibrillation?”; Adult Cardiac Surgery—“The Right Internal Thoracic Artery—The Forgotten Conduit: 5,766 Patients and 991 Angiograms”; and Congenital Heart Surgery—“Trends in the Indications and Survival in Pediatric Heart Transplants—A 24-Year Single-Center Experience in 307 Patients.” Of particular note were four highly motivational presentations: the Presidential Address, the Thomas B. Ferguson Lecture, the Lillehei Lecture, and the Ethics Debate. In his Presidential Address “It's Not the Destination, It's the Journey: Lessons Learned,” Dr Douglas J. Mathisen spoke about the factors that can bring about the best cardiothoracic surgery residency training programs. Resident training has long been among his passions, and he emphasized that resident issues, including recruitment of future cardiothoracic surgeons, are and should continue to be ongoing priorities for the specialty. The Thomas B. Ferguson lecture was given by Atul Gawande. Dr Gawande's lecture focused on what is means to be great in surgery by focusing on the importance of checklists in an age of increasingly complex surgical procedures. Dr Gawande presented data on how major complications have been reduced by the use of checklists, yet there is still resistance to the adoption of them. The C. Walton Lillehei Lecture was presented by Joseph P. Vacanti. Dr Vacanti's presentation “From Surgical Reconstruction to Regenerative Medicine,” focused on how the science of tissue engineering is evolving, how it is currently used, and where it might lead. The Ethics Debate, “A Jehovah's Witness Patient who Faces Imminent Exsanguination Should be Transfused,” focused on a surgeon's dilemma: should the surgeon follow the patient's directive or the agent's override—allow the patient to die or transfuse? Two experienced surgeons gave opposing answers to this dilemma. In addition to these presentations, the Workforce on Patient Safety offered another important patient safety parallel session, and the Workforce on Annual Meeting introduced two new parallel sessions that highlighted abstracts on basic science research for Adult Cardiac and General Thoracic Surgery. The Workforce on Practice Management once again presented a 4-hour STS Practice Management Summit to an audience of more than 300 physicians and nonphysicians. New this year, the Workforce on Critical Care, offered a full-day STS Postgraduate Cardiothoracic Critical Care Symposium on Sunday from 8 am to 4:30 pm. Wrapping up the STS 47th Annual Meeting was STS University. There were more than 460 registrations for 12 sessions, which ranged from a hands-on course on thoracoscopic lobectomy to a course on mechanical support for the pediatric patient. STS University provided an opportunity for registrants to learn the latest techniques of cardiothoracic surgery through hands-on procedural education taught by world-renowned instructors. Once again, physicians and nonphysicians will have the opportunity to earn continuing medical education (CME) credit at home or in the office. STS 47th Annual Meeting Online comprises most of the sessions from the live conference, including the surgical symposia, general sessions, parallel surgical forums, surgical motion pictures, and the ethics debate. This activity will be available for CME credit until February 1, 2012. In addition to STS 47th Annual Meeting Online, STS is pleased to announce the joint program with the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS): STS/AATS Tech-Con 2011 Online. All of the educational tracks from STS/AATS Tech-Con 2011 have been captured and are available to view online for CME credit. For more information or to register for either of these, please visit www.sts.org. The success of the Annual Meeting was largely due to the exemplary commitment of the Workforce on Annual Meeting under the leadership of Joseph F. Sabik III, MD (Workforce Chair), Duke E. Cameron, MD (STS University Task Force Co-Chair), Scott J. Swanson, MD (STS University Task Force Co-Chair), Joseph A. Dearani, MD (Surgical Symposia Task Force Co-Chair), Michael Lanuti, MD (Surgical Symposia Task Force Co-Chair), M. Blair Marshall, MD (Tech-Con Task Force Co-Chair), and Eric E. Roselli, MD (Tech-Con Task Force Co-Chair). Before the STS 47th Annual Meeting, STS/AATS Tech-Con 2011 welcomed more than 1,100 attendees. The Tech-Con Task Force did an excellent job putting together a program that encompassed new technologies and emerging trends. The cardiac and thoracic tracks covered recent advances in transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), the less invasive revascularization, and new approaches for diagnosis and therapy for thoracic malignancy. These tracks included presentations on robotic surgery for lung cancer, establishing a hybrid suite in a hospital, and off-pump vs on-pump: pitfalls and lessons learned about patient selection. The following officers were elected at the annual Business Meeting: Michael J. Mack, President; Jeffery B. Rich, First Vice President; Douglas E. Wood, Second Vice President; and David A. Fullerton, Secretary. Carolyn E. Reed was reelected as Treasurer, Robert S.D. Higgins was elected Treasurer-Elect, and L. Henry Edmunds, Jr, was reelected as the Editor of The Annnals of Thorac Surgery. Joseph F. Sabik III was elected as a Director-at-Large, and Mark S. Allen was reelected as a Director-at-Large. Complete rosters of the STS Board of Directors, Standing Committees, Council Operating Boards, Workforces, Annual Meeting Task Forces, and The Annals Editorial Board follows this report. The Society extends its appreciation to retiring STS officers, Committee members, and Workforce members for their dedicated service. The STS membership elected 132 Active and 85 International Members this year. During 2010, 72 Candidate, 32 Associate, and 117 Pre-Candidate Members were also admitted as part of the rolling admissions process. The Society now has more than 6,100 members. The STS would like to thank the many member volunteers and their supportive families for their commitment to the specialty, as well as for the hard work and long hours they put into developing and implementing this highly successful meeting. The STS 48th Annual Meeting will be held from January 30 to February 1, 2012. Michael J. Mack, Dallas, TX Jeffrey B. Rich, Norfolk, VA Douglas E. Wood, Seattle, WA David A.
