ABSTRACT- After the typical French figure of the « soldier and ploughman », this study follows the evolution of the pynandî, the « soldier-farmer », in the Paraguayan political rhetoric, in the 30's and 40's. At first an embodiment of the permanent features of Paraguayanity, it will be turned by writer Juan Natalicio Gonzalez into one of the organizing concepts of a political, « functionalized » myth, and a pure product of his rewriting of national history.
