Resumo

Magnetic spectrometers have been used to study the positions of energy levels in Fe54 and Fe56 excited in the (p,p′) reaction. One hundred and fifty levels below an excitation energy of 8.1 MeV have been assigned to Fe54, and forty levels below an excitation energy of 5.5 MeV have been assigned to Fe56. These and other available data on isotopes of iron are analysed to investigate the variation of level density with neutron number near the closed neutron shell. Attention is drawn to the usefulness of magnetic spectrometers for the systematic study of changes in nuclear level densities.
